Cell use on planes: Really a danger?

Cell use on planes: Really a danger?
http://rss.cnn.com/~r/rss/cnn_travel/~3/XO4n8_gxSCI/index.html

(CNN) — You know who you are. You leave your phone on during flights, maybe do a little text messaging and otherwise break rules about cell phone use on planes once the doors close for departure.

“This is an absurd rule. I never turn (mine) off. I may text or browse the Web, but I never talk on the phone,” one CNN.com reader commented recently.

On the other side of the aisle are passengers who abide by the safety instructions and warnings, worried that cellular signals may indeed interfere with cockpit instruments.

Take those two camps and add passengers who say either way, listening to fellow travelers chatter on the phone would be annoying, and you have a heated debate — sometimes literally in the airplane aisles.

'Free' flights aren't cheap

What does that ‘free’ flight really cost you?

If you are thinking of signing up for a credit card because it offers air miles, you should ask yourself just how much that “free” flight will actually cost you.

In light of their recent advertising campaigns, Personal Finance took a closer look at the rewards programmes offered by South African Airways (SAA) and British Airways (BA) via Nedbank and Standard Bank respectively to determine which programme offers you more value. For the purpose of this exercise, Personal Finance used three different levels of expenditure on credit cards: R5 000 a month, R10 000 a month and R15 000 a month.

LONDON — International tour operators evacuated thousands of vacationers from Tunisia on Friday as the civil unrest that has gripped the North African country for weeks began hurting its critical tourism industry.

Thomas Cook said it was asking its roughly 3,800 British, Irish, and German customers in Tunisia to leave the country, while some 200 Dutch tourists were repatriated Thursday night via a chartered flight. U.S. and European governments have issued a series of travel alerts warning their citizens away from nonessential travel to Tunisia.

Once you make it big in the world of pro-sports, traveling suddenly becomes a much more enjoyable experience. While most of the world stuffs itself into tiny seats hoping for a bag of pretzels, the world of chartered sports flights means a whole different level of luxury.

Wow, suddenly first class and business class look like economy seats compared to this.

Emirates Leaves Rivals in Slipstream

Emirates Leaves Rivals in Slipstream
http://www.spiegel.de/international/business/0,1518,737603,00.html

The Dubai-based airline Emirates is considered the world’s most successful and has ambitious plans to expand. Its European rivals such as Lufthansa and British Airways accuse the airline of benefitting from massive state subsidies. But the reality is more complicated.

There are only a few top executives who can gaze out on the future of their own company from the comfort of their own desk. But Tim Clark, the 63-year-old British president of the Dubai-based airline Emirates, is one of them.

Clark’s office with its large windows sits on the top floor of the company’s headquarters at Dubai International Airport. Right in front of his building, a glimmering gray-blue colossus of steel is shooting up. In late 2012, when the new terminal building for Airbus A380s is completed, up to 20 of the massive jets should be able to dock there at the same time. Emirates already has 15 of the world’s largest passenger jets in service. It has another 75 on order. And it plans on buying more.
